Korean Tofu Steak Recipe

Welcome to my very first recipe on Sarah’s Tastebuds!

I bring you a Korean style tofu steak. This is literally the easiest recipe ever. I first saw this recipe on Maangchi’s YouTube channel and thought hmmm I can make that. And I kid you not, it was SO GOOD. I ate it with some plain rice on the side and it was a delish dish. You can choose to use Basmati rice or sushi rice, but whatever you choose it’s delicious. So let me break this recipe down for you in two/three steps.

  1. Make the marinade and let it sit while you fry up the tofu.

  2. Cook your rice (just some good old plain white rice)

  3. Fry the tofu in some sunflower oil or any other flavourless oil

Like I said, easy right?

Ingredients

  • One pack of firm tofu (the original recipe was half a package but I love so I always make more)

  • 2 green onions (chopped finely)

  • 2 cloves of garlic (crushed/chopped)

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 2 teaspoons Korean hot pepper powder (you can find it in a Asian supermarket)

  • 2 teaspoons sugar (or any other sweetener)

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (roasted)

Directions

  • So you start by drying your tofu. You can place a heavy object on the tofu block with some paper towels underneath so the water will drain out. If you don’t it won’t be a disaster but be careful while frying, the oil may splatter. If it does splatter just lower the heat.

  • Make the sauce by combining: the green onions, garlic, hot pepper powder, sesame oil, sugar and sesame seeds. Let it sit until you are done frying the tofu

  • After most of the water has been drained out of the tofu block you can cut the tofu in thick cuts and dry them again on the cut side (just quickly)

  • Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry the tofu pieces until golden brown

  • After frying drain them the excess oil on a paper towel.

  • Serve it with the sauce on top (or on the side), some rice on the side and enjoy!

This Korean dish is mostly eaten as a side dish, but it can easily be a main. It’s especially great for any vegetarians out there. So I hope you recreate this dish and that will enjoy it as much as I do. But be warned of two things!:

1 It is addictive AF!

2 Your breath will smell like a garlic farm
